Enrique Iglesias Talks Twins, Touring and Collaborations With “Popline”

Enrique Iglesias recently spoke during a phone interview with “Popline” about Touring, being a Father to Twins and Collaborations.

Antes de tudo, porque você demorou tanto para marcar uma volta ao Brasil?
Eu sei… muitos anos! A última vez que estive no Brasil foi em 2010 e me lembro perfeitamente. Por mim, eu teria visitado o Brasil muitíssimas vezes, mas infelizmente, nos últimos anos, não deu. Tenho muita vontade de ir. Estou nervoso, ansioso, e com muita vontade de que esse show seja espetacular. Não pude cantar aí durante um grande período da minha carreira, praticamente nos últimos dez anos, então tenho muito a mostrar.

Você disse que lembra perfeitamente da última vinda. Que lembranças você tem do Brasil?
Tenho muitas lembranças, mas me lembro perfeitamente da minha primeira visita ao Brasil, quando eu era um garoto, com meu primeiro álbum, em 1995. Eu me lembro perfeitamente de aterrizar em São Paulo para o lançamento do disco, com a gravadora, e me lembro do primeiro programa de televisão, que foi o do Faustão. Você se lembra do Faustão?

Claro! Ele ainda está no ar! (risos)
O programa dele ainda é popular, né? Incrível! Eu me lembro perfeitamente de tudo que fiz nessa etapa da minha carreira.

Muito tempo passou de lá para cá. Agora você tem mais de 40 anos, é pai e um cantor superpremiado. Como pessoa e como artista, quem é esse Enrique Iglesias que volta ao país?
Acho que é uma coisa de energia. De certa maneira, acho que evoluí e mudei muito, mas por outro lado também acho que tenho muito daquela época. O que posso dizer é que acho incrível esse momento da minha carreira, com a evolução… Não digo evolução do tipo “uau! olha como ele evoluiu incrivelmente!” (risos). Eu digo por mim mesmo, como eu me vejo. Eu nunca imaginei que poderia cantar ou escrever músicas como “I Like It”, “Bailando”, “Súbeme la Radio”. Passei por etapas muito diferentes na minha carreira e acho que agora estou desfrutando muito. Posso subir no palco e cantar músicas muito, muito diferentes. El

E quanto aos seus filhos? Eles ainda têm meses de vida e acredito que você e Anna Kournikova ainda estão se descobrindo como pais. Como é já estar em turnê e ter que viajar?
É difícil. É difícil sim, mas graças a Deus eu tenho a flexibilidade de poder fazer meu itinerário e não ficar fora de casa mais de duas semanas. Esse é o máximo agora. Por exemplo, quando for ao Brasil, vou só ao Brasil e à Argentina, e só a São Paulo e a Buenos Aires. Tento não marcar muitos shows seguidos para poder voltar para casa.

Isso é uma novidade para você, né?
Sim, é uma novidade, mas é importante para mim. Agora mesmo, tenho energia e vontade de subir no palco, de cantar, de curtir, e quero aproveitar isso, mas também não abusar… Quero dizer, abusar não é uma boa palavra. O que eu quero é ter um equilíbrio entre a vida pessoal e a artística.

Falando sobre a turnê, o que ela tem de diferente das outras? Desde o álbum “Sex and Love” (2014), essa é sua terceira turnê.
Ah, mudou muita coisa. Desde o “Sex and Love”, já lançamos tipo quatro músicas novas. Eu acredito que não é tanto um disco que muda o show. São as músicas. Uma música é como um capítulo, uma série. Pode ser maior que um disco, sobretudo hoje em dia. Para mim, cada canção marca uma etapa, uma certa forma de como você se sente naquele momento. Uma música, para mim, é mais que uma música. Com os singles, busco dar importância para cada uma delas. Não quero lançar músicas apenas por lançá-las, ainda mais agora na minha carreira. Quando escrevo e vou trabalhar com amigos e produtores, a primeira coisa que falo é: “se vamos fazer uma música apenas por fazer, é melhor ficarmos em casa e não fazermos nada”. Se fazemos fazê-la, é porque realmente nos comove, nos enche de entusiasmos.

Mas você pensa em fazer um álbum Novo?

Veja bem. Agora, na minha carreira, da forma que as coisas andaram, não acho que é importante um disco. Eu acho que um disco é importante para o artista ter um grupo de músicas. Mas agora não é primordial para mim.

avou versões de suas músicas com Sandy & Junior, Luan Santana e Zé Felipe. Qual é tua conexão com a música brasileira e os artistas brasileiros?
Olha que engraçado… Uma das minhas primeiras colaborações – de toda minha carreira, não apenas brasileira – foi com Sandy e Junior.

Ah, sim?
Sim! Sim, sim! Eu me lembro perfeitamente. Foi incrível. As colaborações me encantam. Eu não as faço apenas por fazê-las: “ah, isso aqui vai dar uma boa resposta em tal região”. Não. Eu faço porque realmente gosto e sempre se aprende. Com Luan Santana, tive a oportunidade de trabalhar em “Bailando” e poder ver, aprender, prestar atenção em como ele escreve, como faz. Isso, para mim, é bom.

Há outros sileiros com quem você gostaria de gravar?
Ah, com muitos cantores brasileiros. Mas eu funciono assim: primeiro crio a música e depois eu penso na colaboração. Não tenho sorte pensando na colaboração antes da música.

Todas suas últimas parcerias foram com homens. Pensa em gravar mais com mulheres?
Sim. Claro! Mas vou repetir: eu não sou muito de pensar na colaboração assim. “Ah, essa colaboração vai ser com um artista desta região, vai ser em espanhol ou inglês, vai ser homem ou mulher…”. Não penso muito assim. Eu penso primeiro na canção e depois imagino quem poderia agregar nela.

Entendo. Voltando à turnê, a “Enrique Iglesias Live!” te leva para Grécia, Israel e inclusive o Brasil, aonde você não vinha há muito tempo. Há algum lugar no mundo onde você ainda não cantou?
Ai! São tantos lugares. Óbvio que não visitei alguns. Teria que ver. (pensa) Ainda não cantei… (pausa) Tem que haver algum lugar. Sei que já visitei quase todo o mundo.

Todos os continentes com certeza.
Sim, sem dúvida. Menos Antártida! (risos)

Pergunto isso porque queria saber se você realmente consegue conhecer os lugares. Você separa tempo para turismo ou só conhece diferentes aeroportos e hotéis?
Olha, uma turnê acaba sendo muito sobre aeroportos e hotéis, infelizmente, né? Mas eu gosto, não me importo, já estou acostumado. Se tenho a sorte de visitar um lugar várias vezes ou ter um dia livre, posso conhecer sem ter que trabalhar. No Brasil, por exemplo, visitei Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo muitas vezes no início da minha carreira – sobretudo o Rio – e pude andar pela cidade, visitar lugares e conhecer mais da cultura, da comida, fazer amigos.

Falemos sobre as redes sociais agora. Você gosta? É ativo?
Sim. Eu gosto. Uso mais alguns do que outros. O Instagram atualmente é meu favorito. Tenho tendência a ficar muito conectado ao Instagram. Não sei o que acontece, mas ele me prende.

E você recebe muitas mensagens de brasileiros lá?
Sim! Muitas. Vejo muita gente do Brasil nas redes sociais. E eu me lembro particularmente dos meus fãs do Brasil. Não digo assim vagamento. Eu me lembro de rostos específicos! Sim! Espero poder reconhecer as caras quando chegue a São Paulo. Espero depois poder voltar também para o Rio e outras cidades no Brasil.

First of all, why did you take so long to book a trip to Brazil?

I know … many years! The last time I was in Brazil was in 2010 and I remember perfectly. For me, I would have visited Brazil many times, but unfortunately, in recent years, I have not. I really want to go. I am nervous, anxious, and very willing that this show is spectacular. I have not been able to sing there for a long time in my career, practically in the last ten years, so I have a lot to show.

You said you remember perfectly the last coming. What memories do you have of Brazil?

I have many memories, but I remember perfectly my first visit to Brazil, when I was a boy, with my first album, in 1995. I remember perfectly landing in São Paulo for the album’s release, with the label, and me I remember the first television show, that of Faustão. Do you remember Faustão?

Of course! It’s still in the air! (laughs)

This program is still popular, right? Amazing! I remember perfectly everything I did during this stage of my career.

A lot of time has passed from here to here. Now you’re over 40, you’re a father and an over-the-top singer. As a person and as an artist, who is this Enrique Iglesias returning to the country?

I think it’s an energy thing. In a way, I think I’ve evolved and changed a lot, but on the other hand I also think I have a lot of that time. What I can say is that I find this moment of my career incredible, with evolution … I do not say evolution like “wow! look how amazing he has evolved! “(laughs). I say for myself, as I see myself. I never imagined that I could sing or write songs like “I Like It,” “Bailando,” “Súbeme la Radio.” I went through very different stages in my career and I think I’m enjoying it a lot now. I can go up on stage and sing very, very different songs.

What about your children? They are still a couple months old and I believe that you and Anna Kournikova are still discovering yourselves as parents. How is it already touring and having to travel?

It’s difficult. It’s difficult, but thanks to God I have the flexibility to be able to do my itinerary and not stay out of the house for more than two weeks. This is the maximum now. For example, when I go to Brazil, I go only to Brazil and Argentina, and only to São Paulo and Buenos Aires. I try not to book many shows in a row so I can go home.

 

This is new to you, right? Yes, it’s new, but it’s important to me. Right now, I have the energy and the will to go on stage, sing, enjoy, and I want to enjoy it, but not to abuse … I mean, to abuse is not a good word. What I want is to have a balance between personal and artistic life.

Talking about the tour, what makes it different from the others? Since the album “Sex and Love” (2014), this is their third tour. Oh, a lot has changed. Since “Sex and Love”, we’ve released four new songs. I believe it’s not so much a record that changes the show. It’s the songs. A song is like a chapter, a series. It can be bigger than a disc, especially nowadays. For me, each song marks a stage, a certain way of how you feel at that moment. A song, to me, is more than a song. With the singles, I try to give importance to each one of them. I do not want to release songs just by releasing them, especially now in my career. When I write and go to work with friends and producers, the first thing I say is, “If we’re going to make a song just by doing it, we’d better stay home and do nothing.” If we do it, it is because it really moves us, it fills us with enthusiasm.

But do you think about making a new album?

You see? Now, in my career, the way things have gone, I do not think a record is important. I think a record is important for the artist to have a group of songs. But now it is not paramount to me.

 

You have recorded versions of your songs with Sandy & Junior, Luan Santana and Zé Felipe. What is your connection with Brazilian music and Brazilian artists?

Look how funny … One of my first collaborations – of all my career, not only Brazilian – was with Sandy and Junior.

Ah yes?

Yes! Yes Yes! I remember perfectly. It was amazing. The collaborations enchant me. I do not just do them by doing them:”Ah, this is going to give a good response in that region.” No. I do because I really like and always learn. With Luan Santana, I had the opportunity to work in “Bailando” and to see, learn, pay attention to how he writes, how he does it. That, to me, is good.

Are there other Brazilian singers that you would like to record with?

Ah, with many Brazilian singers. But I work like this: first I create the song and then I think about the collaboration. I’m not lucky enough to think about collaboration before music.

 

All your last collaborations were with men. Think about recording more with women?

Yes of course! But I’ll repeat: I’m not much of thinking about collaboration like that. “Ah, this collaboration will be with an artist from this region, it will be in Spanish or English, it will be male or female …”. I do not think much of it. I think first of the song and then imagine who I could add to it.

“Enrique Iglesias Live!” Takes you to Greece, Israel and even Brazil, where you have not been for a long time. Is there anywhere in the world where you have not sang yet?

There are so many places. Obviously I have not visited some. Would have to see. (thinks) I have not sung yet … (pause) There has to be some place. I know I’ve visited almost everywhere. All continents for sure. Yes No doubt. Unless Antarctica! (laughs)

I ask this because I want to know if you really know the places. Do you set aside time for tourism or just know different airports and hotels?

Look, a tour ends up being a lot about airports and hotels, unfortunately, right? But I like it, I do not care, I’m already used to it. If I have the luck to visit a place several times or have a day off, I can meet without having to work. In Brazil, for example, I visited Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo many times at the beginning of my career – especially Rio – and I was able to walk around the city, visit places and learn about culture, food, and friends.

Let’s talk about social networks now. Do you like it? Are you active?

Instagram is currently my favorite. I tend to get very connected to Instagram. I do not know what happens, but it catches me.

And you get many messages from Brazilians?

Yes many, I see a lot of Brazilians on social networks. And I particularly remember my fans from Brazil. I do not say so wondering. I remember specific faces! Yes! I hope I can recognize the guys when I get to Sao Paulo. I hope later to return to Rio and other cities in Brazil.
